Understanding Diminished Value (DV) For Autobody Shops With Collision Hub and MyCrash.net
Everywhere (except Georgia) listen up!
If you are repairing vehicles for customers on 3rd party claims (accidents that were not their fault) you must start discussing Diminished Value.
With today's environment around electronic estimates and parts ordering, every single repair is "reported" to a business tracking the service history of that vehicle. From your estimating system to your dealership parts department, it always seems to land on a CARFAX report. That means your customer is going to have some explaining to do at trade-in or even on Facebook marketplace.
DV is also a great gap tool to assist customers who want proper repairs, but do not want to pursue through small claims court.

WARNING: Technician Discretion In Collision Repair
Просмотров 2,2 тыс.3 месяца назад
It's one thing to follow the instructions the OE provides in the procedures, but what do you do when they tell you to do what you want? In many cases OEs are publishing open ended directions on a variety of procedures, stating the technician should use their own discretion. In this episode we discuss what that means and what guidelines or rules should techs use when making their own decisions. ...

    this reminds me of a Government organization! Lots of BS talk! Not real world action, the bottom line is that the insurance industry will not pay for all this time that you people want to spend on fixing a car! the Problem is that the estimating software does not allow for many needed things that have to be done when repairing a vehicle. The estimating systems are capable of including many item but they just dont and its because the insurance industry is in control of the estimating software not the Body Shops! Do any of you people actually have a Body Shop? because you remind me of IICAR people or paint reps! you dont even talk as Body Shop people do. If you are estimators then ok you are estimators I dont know what you know about actually getting the car repaired and back to the customer in a timely manor.

    So my car was in an accident back in August. I had trouble with my seatbelt and going over bumps my seatbelt would tighten the car felt like it wasn’t stealing correctly after they repaired. I let them know that still wasn’t correctly in the front.. I went over a bump it felt like the ABS WOULD KICK IN. Brought it back a few times they couldn’t find anything because it was on the dashboard.. fast forward the end of March. I was pulling into the bank to get money out of ATM and I must’ve not hit but rubbed against the curb ever so slightly. Pulling out of the bank driveway. I noticed I couldn’t steer my car. My tire was bent in so I had it towed to a different dealership because clearly the ones that I went to originally didn’t fix the problem. During the accident the tie rod was bent and according to my boyfriend a Welder they didn’t replace it they heated it up and bent it back. When I brought it back to the new dealership, they found not only that but the steering column was cracked in three places. My question to you is how easy is it to crack a steering column without getting into an accident? My insurance progressive that I ran over something in the road and that’s how that happened. How likely is that because I was not in another accident and I did not run over something.

    The only complaint I have as a consumer with diminished value is how the industry hasn't kept up with places like Carvana. I was about to sell a car to Carvana when it got hit. Carvana was going to give an incredible amount of money as they had for other cars I'd sold to them (literally over what I paid at the dealer new for one). Only problem now was they don't sell accident cars. So it was a true ≈6000 drop in price if I'd sold to them after it was fixed. They buy for more than KBB often. Going third party clamient $300 was all I was going to get. In the end I took a check and sold it as is, I lost some but would have lost more if I'd gotten it repaired.

    I love the video. I love that you acknowledge that sometimes less intrusive is a great option if the OEM provides information to do so. I would love to see the OEMs or the Industry specifically identify what is an outer panel ( Is a rear body an outer? Is one of the most common questions I get asked) or a structural or non-structural panel to identify what panels may have some options. I hope that some of the wreck checkers out there watch this because it seems like they conveniently forget this type of information exists.

    Great video guys! This information is very much appreciated and needed for our industry. GM does now offer an overlap or a backing plate on several different procedures. There is a document on this GM doc 5247829. It is an added hyperlink on many outer panel sectioning procedures. On the FCA Stellantis outer panel sectioning nonstructural procedures it mentions a 13mm backing plate and also a 50 mm backing plate. Lots of confusion on which one we are supposed to be using can you address? We would love to see you address the movement toward repairing frames that are UHS steel and the challenges that will bring. Toyota guidelines are now saying repair all steel unless it’s kinked is the way we are reading their body repair manual. They have removed crib 175 and revised crib 160. Thoughts? Fords welding precautions line #8 guidelines state that UHS steel should not be heated to straighten and severely kinked or bent parts should be replaced. So we can repair if it’s not kinked? Thoughts? Keep up the great work! We appreciate your time and energy! Collision techs would love to see QR codes with repair procedures! Honda guidelines for repairing frame rails on the UHS and HSS frame rails. If a rail 780 MPa or higher is 5mm out we cannot restore frame dimension? This seems to be very invasive! Scott Kaboos help!

      @jasonbartanen 3 месяца назад

      Craig, thanks for the questions/comments! Appreciate you sharing the GM backing information and happy to see them allowing it; we'll be sure to include an update in a future Repair U episode. Can you direct me to one of the Stellantis 50 mm backer procedures? I know they use them on some rails, but don't recall a model with an outer calling for one; I'm sure I'm forgetting... Can you also direct me to a Toyota procedure; I haven't seen anything like that and would want to reach out to Toyota for clarification, as it doesn't seem aligned with their normal strategy. I believe CRIB 160 is an SRS document...am I looking at the wrong number or are you? For Ford, they allow cold straightening (if not kinked) up to 600 MPa; no straightening, at all, above that. Also, a 'kink' includes areas that are seemingly (by appearance) bent, but cannot be restored to the proper state and/or shape. No straightening on Honda 780; this isn't unlike most OEMs that warn against straightening anything over 600 MPa. GM is the only OEM (on the ATS) that I've seen allowing anything close to the 700+ range. Scott Kaboos is no longer with Honda; he's bee over at I-CAR for a copule of years now. .

      @@jasonbartanen In the FCA / Stellantis sectioning guide for non structural you will see the hyper link for the instruction for the backing plate. Specific instructions on the width 50mm. I only see the 13mm backings plate on the structural parts . I totally love FCA / Stellantis using repair methods not procedures but in specific cases it actually creates confusion.Ram bedside and rear body panels and roofs for examples, replace as serviced and weld bond the panel when using store is what the welding document states. Thanks for the reply sir!

      My apologies I referenced the wrong crib # from Toyota. On the revised Toyota crib 161, states cold repair can be done as long as the metal is not kinked. Many B pillars and frame rails and more are UHS from Toyota. Crib 175 specifically said that any HSS or UHS steel in the passenger compartment could not be repaired, that crib is no longer in the body repair guidelines. new revised 161 does not prohibit the repairing of UHS steel or am I missing something here? I am adding the original crib 161 and 175 . I would greatly appreciate clarification, thank you for your time and considerations! Please read crib 161 and see if we are missing something. I know Scott is with I-CAR but you guys have lots of connections, would love to see more information and context around the HSS and UHS steel and frame dimensions being off on Honda/ Acura vehicles. old version CRIB # 161 Collision Damage Repair Precautions HIGH STRENGTH & ULTRA HIGH STRENGTH STEEL (HSS & UHSS) OCCUPANT CABIN REINFORCEMENT REPAIR IS PROHIBITED HSS & UHSS occupant cabin reinforcements are designed to absorb, channel, and dissipate collision energy and perform at 100% strength in their original shape. • @jasonbartanen
      @jasonbartanen 2 месяца назад

      I'm relying on my memory, as I wasn't able to find anything documented, but from my recollection Ford's concern is having enough access in the wheelhouse area to properly seat the SPRs. For the front of the bedside, access is definitely a problem and blind rivets or welding are the only options.

      Unknown. Anywhere not visible them 1/4 inch rivets are fine but in the wheel well area… punch them out, die flatten, prep, metal bond and the 3x3 spr’s. Tool fits in there no problem. Looks factory and the whole area has adhesive not just the center bit.
